01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Strolling along Azalea Dori south of Komagome Station, the aroma of toasted flour leads naturally to a tiny storefront. CHAMONIX is a dedicated takeout bakery favored by those with an appreciation for crusty French-style breads. The compact shop fits only about 2 parties at a time, yet its shelves display an orderly array ranging from everyday table loaves to afternoon pastries.

A sensible place to start is the baguette traditionnelle, which highlights robust wheat aromas and an elastic, aerated crumb. The exterior crust is thick and deeply baked, while the interior yields a chewy, satisfying bite that brings out the grain's natural character the more it is chewed. With its balanced, gentle saltiness, it eats well straight out of the bag, makes a sturdy foundation for ham, tomato, and butter sandwiches, and pairs nicely with a drizzle of honey. Alongside classic pain de campagne, the bakery occasionally puts out an eye-catching squid ink baguette, keeping hard-bread enthusiasts intrigued.

Beyond hearth breads for the table, the counter is stocked with savory items and sweet bakes suitable for light bites. The black tea scone, crisp on the surface and moist within, carries a fragrant tea aroma well-suited to teatime. Offerings like spicy chorizo and salsa danishes, a uniquely airy shio pan with a delicate snap, and soft brioche sucre provide plenty of varied choices to pack into a bakery box.

CHAMONIX opens from 9:30 in the morning until 18:00 in the afternoon, with popular loaves frequently selling out past midday. It is well worth pausing during a walk through Komagome to pick up a loaf for dinner or a fresh pastry for the afternoon.
